Description

The Sloughi is an elegant and athletic breed known for its speed, grace, and loyal temperament. Originating in North Africa, particularly in countries like Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, this ancient sighthound was traditionally used for hunting game such as gazelle, hare, and wild boar. The Sloughi’s exceptional stamina, keen eyesight, and refined build have made it a valued companion for nomadic tribes and a cherished hunting partner for centuries. Sloughis typically stand between 24 to 29 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 35 to 50 pounds, with males being larger than females. They have a lean, muscular frame that emphasizes their agility and speed. Their short, smooth coat is easy to care for and comes in various shades, including sand, fawn, brindle, or black-masked varieties. The breed’s dark, almond-shaped eyes exude a gentle and soulful expression, while their high-set, folded ears and long, curved tail contribute to their graceful appearance. The temperament of the Sloughi is known for being intelligent, independent, and devoted. Sloughis form strong bonds with their families and are known for being affectionate and gentle with their loved ones. However, they can be aloof with strangers and may exhibit a reserved demeanor. Early socialization is important for helping them feel comfortable in new environments and with unfamiliar people. They are intelligent and capable of learning, but their independent nature means they can sometimes be stubborn. Training should be consistent and use positive reinforcement methods to build trust and cooperation. Sloughis have moderate to high energy levels and require regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. They enjoy activities that allow them to run and stretch their legs, such as sprinting in a secure, fenced area or joining their owners on long walks or hikes. Despite their need for exercise, Sloughis are known for being calm and relaxed indoors, making them adaptable to a variety of living situations as long as they receive sufficient physical and mental stimulation. Grooming a Sloughi is minimal due to their short coat. Weekly brushing is sufficient to remove loose hair and keep their coat sleek. Routine ear cleaning, dental care, and nail trimming are also essential for their overall health. Bathing should only be done occasionally or as needed. Sloughis have a lifespan of around 12 to 15 years and are generally healthy. However, they can be prone to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and sensitivity to anesthesia. Regular veterinary checkups, a balanced diet, and attentive care help ensure their long-term well-being.
